Case Studies
Topeka Public Schools
The following case study demonstrates how Data Technique is able to implement K-12 identity solutions.
The Requirement:
As one of the largest school districts in the state of Kansas, Topeka Public Schools manages over 18,000 student and staff accounts with over 40% of them changing each year. The manual process of identifying and making account changes for student and staff withdraws and transfers between schools was costly, ineffective, and presented a security risk.
Data Technique was engaged by Topeka Public Schools to utilize its knowledge and experience of Identity Management and policy based security to develop an integrated solution that would:
- Automate the manual process of student enrollment and student transfers
- Manage access to network resources by students and staff
- Make access to information easier
- Increase overall network security
The solution would need to automatically provision and de-provisioning electronic identities and establish a central repository to enforce a consistent security policy across the entire network.
Solutions in Action:
Data Technique worked closely with school administrators and IT staff to fully understand the existing business process and develop an automated solution that would meet the desired business and technical objectives. This discovery process helped Data Technique design and deploy a secure self-provisioning network that captured all relevant staff and student data from the Student Information System. This data was then used to update all user identities, passwords, and access rights to the e-mail and file systems. The new system increased security by better managing passwords, authentication, and access control while making access to information much easier.
Results:
The self-provisioning network developed by Data Technique automated a process that typically took the administrative staff weeks. Furthermore, data throughout the network was more accurate, which increased efficiency even more. Security for the network was enhanced through stronger enforcement of security policies and a dramatic reduction of rogue accounts.
Additional phases for this project will allow secure remote access to confidential student information by parents and teachers through a portal, which will be fully integrated with an authentication directory. The authentication directory will contain all security and access control policies based on an individual’s relationship with the school district.
